Emily & Aiden look stronger than ever, but does Victoria have other plans? (ABC)

The new year has arrived, and with it the return of some of our favorite television series after their holiday hiatus. Viewers have spent the break with many unanswered questions. What’s next for “Revenge’s” Emily Thorne and Aiden? What is the significance of Ezra’s younger brother, Wesley’s, return to “Pretty Little Liars?” Will “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Meredith and Derek - or MerDer to you loyal Grey’s fans - make it to the tenth and perhaps final season? What does NYC have in store for Hannah and her posse as “Girls” returns to HBO for its second season? More importantly, will “The Carrie Diaries”, a prequel to “Sex & The City” be a refreshing take on our favorite female foursome, or will it seem like an awful attempt to replace the irreplaceable? And finally, will “Glee’s” Sadie Hawkins dance stir up some drama or simply some good ‘ol tunes?

So many shows, so many questions. And “Glee” is not the only series where the music can make or break the important moments. Remember when Angus and Julia Stone’s haunting tune “Hold On” opened the "Revenge" pilot? And let's not forget “For You,” which became the theme song for the series as Emily reflected on all that she’d lost, but more importantly on the justice she seeks to gain. Or Hannah’s unforgettable dance session to Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” on "Girls"? Or how just about every poignant moment in Grey’s has a fitting tune to make us cry more or laugh harder? From Pierz Faccini “A Storm Is Going to Come” to Andrew Belle’s “In My Veins” the music in Grey’s Anatomy has made us love the show more and hate certain characters less; it’s brought talented artists on our radar and popularized Soundhound, all while declaring the importance of music supervision in television.

As we await the return of these shows, it’s impossible not to be excited, or attempt to predict songs that might be played. So take note of the airdates and times, and let’s see if any of the tunes below make an appearance!

Revenge (ABC) – Jan. 6

Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family) – Jan. 8

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC) – Jan. 10

Girls (HBO) – Jan. 13

Carrie Diaries (CWTV) – Jan. 14

Glee  (FOX) – Jan. 24

Rachel Yamagata, a TV soundtrack favorite, has been featured on "Pretty Little Liars," "The OC," "One Tree Hill," "Grey's Anatomy" and more. She also released a new EP "Heavyweight" in November. And of the six songs, I would imagine "It'll Do" or the EP's title tune to accompany Emily, Aiden and even Daniel in a stressful, heart-racing scene.

Gary Clark Jr. is still making his way through our speakers and scenes but he's doing so fast. Along with his recent performance in the Kennedy Honors alongside legend Tracy Chapman, his first hit "Bright Lights"has made three TV appearances. Now it's time for "Ain't Messin' Around," and I'm thinking "Girls" for this funky and soulful track.

Alex Clare, who is currently on tour with his first album "Lateness of the Hour," is on the same track as Clark. His hit "Too Close" has been heard on "The Vampire Diaries," but it's "I Love You" or "Treading Water" that will have the biggest scene-setting impact on viewers in episodes to come.

Sky Ferriera's music made four appearances on TV in 2012. “Lost In My Bedroom” was played in “Grey’s Anatomy's” “Run, Baby, Run” episode; “Obsession” played in “The Vampire Diaries'" “Kill Or Be Killed;” “One” played in “90210's” “No Good Deed;” and “Red Lips” played in “Gossip Girl's” “Save the Last Chance.” So it’s only a matter of time – fortunately – for another one of her songs to be played. I’m banking on “Everything Is Embarrassing” or “Sad Dreams” for “Pretty Little Liars.”

Jessie Ware has yet to make an appearance on any of the above shows, but now is her time. “Wildest Moments” would fit all (especially Girls) but Glee - it’s captivating, but I don’t think choreography would be a nice accompaniment for this particular tune.

Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen” has also gained some popularity and could be a great track for a 16 –year-old finding herself in the big city, also known as the young Bradshaw. Same for Macklemore’s “Thriftshop,” which would fit another one of Hannah’s dance parties perfectly.

Glen Hansard's "You Will Become" could be the perfect ending to a Carrie Diaries episode as we can expect she will be struggling her identity, like any and every teenage girl in America.

As for some up and coming artists who haven’t broken into the television series realm yet my votes would go to:

Annelise Emerick “This Love Won’t Break Your Heart” – Any show, considering its heart-warming (or breaking for those cynics), New Years Eve relevance

Matt Corby “Brother” or “Made of Stone” –  Grey’s Anatomy, Revenge

Bernhoft "C'mon Talk" or "Choices" - For this, I picture an original and sick Glee collab, but the song may not be popular enough (yet) for the McKinley High crew to take on.

Nadine Shah “Aching Bones” – Revenge

So watch and listen. I’ll be doing both while keeping my fingers crossed that at least one of the above songs blasts through the speakers of my TV during an epic scene.

Look out for music recaps of "Girls" once the second season starts to know exactly what's being played and when throughout the episodes!
