L.A. City Council approved a project Monday that will create The Village at USC. The Village will offer student housing and retail options.

The project passed unanimously and will allow USC to redevelop university-owned land. The project is estimated to cost $1.1 billion.

"Not only will the Village at USC profoundly enrich our University Park Campus, it will be a tremendous boon for our surrounding neighborhoods, and for all of Los Angeles," said USC President C. L. Max Nikias in a press release.

The project will create around 12,000 jobs, of which 8,000 will be permanent.

USC has promised to fill 30 percent of the jobs locally.
