NYPD Arrests Woman Linked To Fatal Subway Push In Queens
The woman, Erika Menendez, selected her victim because she believed he was a Muslim or Hindu, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. The victim, Sunando Sen, was crushed by an oncoming train, and according to a roommate, was born in India and raised Hindu.

In a statement released by the district attorney’s office, Mr. Brown quoted Ms. Menendez, “in sum and substance,” as having told the police: “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I’ve been beating them up.” Ms. Menendez conflated the Muslim and Hindu faiths in her comments to the police and in her target for attack, officials said.
The pushing incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday at the 40th Street-Lowery Street station in the neighborhood of Sunnyside. Sen, 46, was looking out over the tracks when a woman approached him from behind and shoved him into the path of a moving 7 train, police said.
Officers arrested Menendez early Saturday after someone who had seen grainy video footage of the suspect fleeing the station spotted her on a Brooklyn street and called 911, a police spokesman said.
This was the second subway shoving death to hit the city this month. Back on Dec. 3, a man was pushed in front of a moving train in a Times Square station.
