National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre dismissed critics of his plan announced at last Friday's presser to place armed guards in schools. During his appearance Sunday morning on NBC's "Meet the Press", La Pierre insisted it's the most effective way to protect children across the country.

“If it’s crazy to call for putting police in and securing our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy,” the gun lobby's chief told David Gregory. He continued pushing forth NRA's talking points in their long standing effort to oppose any type of gun regulation, even in the wake of the mass shooting of elementary school students in Connecticut, when asked about limiting military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

“I don’t believe that’s going to make one difference. There are so many different ways to evade that, even if you had that. You had that for 10 years when (Sen.) Dianne Feinstein passed that ban in ’94. It was on the books. Columbine occurred right in the middle of it – it didn’t make any difference.”
Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., helped pass the assault weapons ban in 1996 that expired in 2004. She has announced that she will introduce new legislation early next year, but LaPierre doesn't believe it will be passed, calling it phony and based on lies
Yet with polling showing that the NRA is not just out of touch with most Americans, but with many gun owners themselves, LaPierre and other pro-weapon advocates look to be outgunned.
