The father of the 20-year-old man who killed 26 people inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut earlier this month claimed his son's body Monday, according to a spokesman for the family.

The Associated Press reported the body had been released Thursday by the office of Connecticut's medical examiner to a person who chose to remain anonymous.

Peter Lanza is a tax director at General Electric and lives in Stamford, Conn. He was divorced from Nancy Lanza, whom their son Adam also killed during his Dec. 14 rampage.

A private funeral was held for her earlier this month in New Hampshire. The family spokesman said arrangements had been made over the weekend before Peter claimed his son's remains, but did not specify what those arrangements were.
