Police in India charged six men with murder Saturday for the assault and gang-rape of a New Delhi woman nearly two weeks ago.

If convicted, the men could face the death penalty, said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.

The woman, who has not been identified, rode a bus in New Delhi on Dec. 16 along with a male friend. Six men approached the duo, beating them both and raping the woman.

She died early Saturday after succumbing to severe internal injuries from the assault.

The high-profile case has sparked outrage and protests across the country, advocating for greater protection for women from sexual violence.
