Teams of rescuers searched for stranded survivors Wednesday after the worst typhoon this year killed at least 283 people in the southern Philippines.

Reuters reported Typhoon Bopha had started to wane as it moved west, but not before triggering landslides and floods along the coast and inland.

Power outages and communication issues made tracking down the roughly 300 missing people difficult.

Thousands more are in shelters. The country also suffered damage to farmland and infrastructure.

According to Reuters, some 20 typhoons strike the Philippines each year.
