Mayor Villaraigosa Launches Pedestrian Safety Initiative
The first new crosswalk was presented at a press conference Monday. The rest of the crosswalks will be painted in the next three months.
The intersections chosen for these crosswalks all have a high number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions.
“Los Angeles is in the midst of a transportation renaissance,” Villaraigosa said in a press release. “We are doubling the size of our rail network, making improvements to traffic flow and adding new bikeways. But we need to ensure that no one gets left behind. This focus on pedestrian safety is part of our efforts to create a 21st century transportation network that works for everyone.”
There will also be an educational campaign by Watch the Road called "Be Aware." The program will include ads on billboards, bus shelters and bus panels.
