WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange plans to run for Senate in the 2013 Australian federal election and will also form a WikiLeaks political party early next year, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Assange has sought asylum in Ecuador's London embassy for about six months, and he believes it could be "several years" from now that the United States government drops its probe into WikiLeaks.

"Mr Assange said plans to register an Australian WikiLeaks party were 'significantly advanced,'" the Morning Herald said.  "He indicated he would be a Senate candidate, and added that 'a number of very worthy people admired by the Australian public' have indicated their availability to stand for election on a party ticket."
