Instagram is no longer in a relationship with Twitter.

On Sunday, Facebook-owned Instagram pulled its support of Twitter, disabling the integration of its photos in tweets. As a result, photos are no longer shown in users' tweets or in their user galleries. An Instagram link to each photo is still included.

The end of their integration was foreshadowed this past summer, when CEO Kevin Systrom posted an Instagram photo to Twitter (ironically) with a caption that said "Sometimes you need an axe," according to Mashable. However, with 36% of Twitter users predominantly sharing photos - 15% of whom integrated Instagram with their Tweets, - fans of both applications are not happy about this "social media war."

Ever since Facebook bought Instagram last spring, Facebook and Twitter - the two most popular social media sites - have been distancing themselves from each other. Instagram is currently working on developing a greater web presense, while Twitter is trying to turn its popularity into profitability.

"We're working on building an awesome Web presence, which we just launched," Systrom said, according to CNN. "We revamped our Web properties, and now we're able to staff up teams to work on Web properties with the Facebook acquisition."

On Monday, Instagram released a better camera and a new filter in its app update, while Twitter added new photo filters in its own update. Twitter has apparently moved on, taking on Instagram with its own features.

All in all, social media loses. Can't the two former partners just get along?
