Indulge LA Takes Chocolate, Pastries To New Heights

The last Indulge LA, held in February, was so memorable that it would be hard to replicate its success, one would imagine. However, the latest event did just that, and took it even further with a separate Sugar Lounge, with each event having its own branded wine glasses for guests to keep refilling.
There were many delicious bites throughout the event, but one of the highlights included 9021PHO's shimp chips with chocolate-garlic-chili dipping sauce, an equally surprising and stellar combination. The savory crunch of the light-as-air shrimp chips complemented the deep and complex notes in the geniously concoted chocolate sauce.
Another highlight bite was the Sweet Pear Chocolate Burger from Montage Laguna Beach. It consisted of a rich chocolate ganache "patty" with Bartlett pear gel (which seemed like a sweet "ketchup") and a thin, crisp pear slice (the "lettuce"), sandwiched between macaron shells (the "buns" of the burger).
The Montage served an array of other creative treats as well. Their chocolate sea salt cookies with small tubes of Kahlua caramel icing were creative and fun because guests could decorate their own mini cookies.
Cake Buzz served slices of its amazing boozy, alcohol-infused cakes. With so many alcoholic cakes and cupcakes these days, unfortunately they don't often taste as good as they look. However, Cake Buzz takes care to reinforce flavor combinations through appropriately paired liquors. For example, the Maple Bacon cake contains Bakon Vodka, Tres Leches Liqueur, and Crown Royal Maple. The moist drunken cake strikes the perfect balance between being delicious without being overpowering, and still having a strong alcohol presence, something that is not easy to do.
The Red Planet, a play on red velvet, consisted of four types of alcohol: Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur, Bacardi Raspberry Rum, Kai Lychee Vodka, and Razzmatazz Schnapps. Garnished with fresh raspberries, it was yet another indulgent and delicious bite.
Cakes weren't the only desserts drenched in alcohol. Drunken Udder Ice Cream's salted caramel bourbon ice cream, as well as its chocolate cabernet ice cream, were great pairings of ice cream flavors and complementary alcohols.
Savory bites that helped to give the palette a nice change included Which Wich? sandwiches and Fresh Brothers' gluten-free pizza. Both were wonderful and substantial additions to round out the more anticipated sugary offerings.
There were also fruity bites, such as guava paste served with cheese that went well with the wine, and Georgetown Cupcake's mini cupcakes served in an array of flavors. A standout was the salted caramel cupcake, especially because by then anything with a hint of salt won extra points.
Many varieties of champagnes, wines and spirits flowed for guests, who were handed their souvenir wine glasses upon entry to the event. Drinks ranged from Hpnotiq and Swarovski crystal-studded Moreno bottles to Cabernet-Syrah wine blends... and even limoncello served via ice luge.
Non-food freebies such as fun photo booth pictures and personalized etching on wine glasses added to the atmosphere of fun and holiday spirit.
Despite pouring tons of sugar in various forms into our bloodstreams in record time during the four hours of the event, perhaps the sweetest part of it all was that proceeds from the event would be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. What makes this an exceptional cause is that the hospital provides free medical care to children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Indulge tickets started at $45, with a separate VIP Sugar Lounge for added enjoyment and luxury, including custom hand-rolled cigars, some Laker Girls, and a life-sized Christmas tree and Santa cake by Déjà Vu Cakes.
Indulge LA was a hit once again, and my prediction for 2013 is that it will likely continue its run in the New Year. In the meantime, we'll be eating extra greens throughout the year so we can fully indulge yet again when the next Indulge LA rolls around!
