Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye died Monday at age 88.

The Democrat was the longest serving senator and a decorated World War II veteran, according to The Washington Post. During his combat service, he lost an arm in battle and earned the Medal of Honor.

Inouye had been in the Senate since 1962.

When asked recently how he wanted to be remembered, he said, "I represented the people of Hawaii and this nation honestly and to the best of my ability. I think I did OK."

Office representatives confirmed his death, saying it came as a result of respiratory complications. His last word was "Aloha."
