Deputy Fire Chief Mark Embrey of the Beverly Hills Fire Department retired on Friday. Embrey had been with the department for 29 years years, going from firefighter to deputy chief during that time.

The deputy chief is in charge mainly of administrative duties. Though usually behind a desk, Embrey would often go out into the community. Before achieving the rank of deputy chief in 2007, Embrey was a battalion chief for the department.

Jobs at the City of Beverly Hills are not typically stepping stones to positions at larger cities. This proved true for Embrey. A go-to man for a variety of issues.

Beverly Hills is known for a variety of things, but at the top of the list is its Class 1 Fire Department. There are many people who wear the badge for the BHFD, which has 25 firefighters on at one time.

I was fortunate enough to work with Deputy Chief Embrey on multiple occasions and he was more than nice and helpful. Embrey always made time to either speak with me over the phone or reply to my emails. In addition, took the time to appear on a program I hosted for KBEV 6 Beverly Hills High School Student Television. He also gave me unprecedented access to the fire department's headquarters for a day in the life of the Beverly Hills Fire Department.

Embrey will be missed by the City of Beverly Hills and the community he served.
