Former Florida governor Charlie Crist announced through Twitter that he is now a Democrat.

Crist attached a picture of him holding his voter registration as proof in a tweet that read, “Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President @BarackObama

The former Republican governor-turned independent Senate candidate’s move was expected, according to the Washington Post.

The Christian Science Monitor reported that while Crist’s overall record is more liberal although he has historically been strong on gun rights and primarily anti-abortion.

“As governor, Crist pushed for stricter air pollution standards and opposed offshore drilling, a position he altered as gas prices rose in 2008. He also reformed state health insurance rules, helping to expand benefits for disabled people and low-income residents.”

The switch has increased speculation he may attempt to run for governor again in 2014, ABC News reported.
