In China's second peaceful transition of power, Xi Jinping became the leader of the world's most populated nation on Thursday.

He formally was elected general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Chairman of the party's Central Military Commission at the first plenary session of the 18th Central Committee.

“Since its founding, the Communist Party of China has made great sacrifices and forged ahead against all odds," Xi said. "It has led the Chinese people in transforming the poor and backward old China into an increasingly prosperous and powerful new China, thus opening a completely new horizon for the great renewal of the Chinese nation."

In his acceptance speech, the new leader cited the importance of the people many times, suggesting the party will keep its close connection with the whole Chinese nation.
"We must always be of the same mind with the people and share the same destiny with them, and we must work together with them and diligently for the public good so as to live up to the expectations of both history and the people," Xi said.

Talking about the China’s relationship with other countries in the world, Xi said, "Just as China needs to learn more about the world, so does the world need to learn more about China,” hoping that the press continues efforts to deepen mutual understanding between China and the world.

The Communist Party of China amended its Constitution yesterday to make the Scientific Outlook on Development part of its long-term action guide. Unanimously agreed by delegates to the 18th CPC National Congress, the amendment juxtaposes the Scientific Outlook on Development along with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of Three Represents, according to a resolution passed by the Party congress.

The Scientific Outlook on Development advocates sustainable and efficient economic and social development instead of breakneck growth at the expense of the environment and society. Experts believe the amendment reflects the country’s determination to pursue balanced development, thus better situating the country to conquer the new challenges facing the world's second largest economy.

Other members of the newly elected Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 18th CPC Central Committee are Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan, and Zhang Gaoli.
