The Syrian National Council (S.N.C.), the largest coalition against Presdient Bashar al-Assad’s regime, opposed the idea to place all opponents of the government under one body on Saturday.

The Syrian National Initiative, backed by the United States and other foreign supporters, was proposed earlier this week to streamline the resistance against the government and prevent bickering among different movements, The Washington Post reported.

WP:

“Representatives from countries backing the opposition have told SNC members repeatedly this week that those seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must unify and expand to gain legitimacy inside Syria and improve the distribution of funds and aid.”

However, an umbrella organization would officially put an end the S.N.C’s efforts to be recognized as the government in exile for all Syrians, The New York Times reported.

NYT:

Louay Safi, a member of S.N.C.'s elected body expressed a sentiment shared by many on the council when he siad, “Let us not create a new body that will take time to be established — ours is already there.”
