Santa Monica City Council will vote on whether or not to charge and regulate the group fitness instructors who use Palisades Park. If passed, groups of three or more will be banned in Palisades Park, a growing hub for outdoor fitness classes.

The city did not monitor outdoor exercise classes closely before but began to take increased notice when residents started complaining that the groups make a lot of noise and ruin the grass, according to NBC Los Angeles. The city also thinks instructors are making a profit from classes on Santa Monica property instead of renting out space, according to KTLA.

"I hope whatever we pass will not prevent people from exercising in the park," said Councilman Bobby Shriver.

Yoga instructor Adam Brewer teaches Saturday yoga classes in Santa Monica’s Palisades Park and asks for a $12 “donation” per class.

If the City Council passes their new regulations in January, instructors will need to pay an annual $100 permit, pay the city 15 percent of their profit, and carry insurance and a license.

Officials encourage individuals to continue running, doing yoga and biking in Santa Monica.
