With about a third of the vote in, Councilman Carl DeMaio is narrowly leading Rep. Bob Filner in the San Diego mayor race.

DeMaio currently has 51 percent of the vote and Filner has 49 percent, reports the L.A. Times.

Whoever wins will replace termed-out Mayor Jerry Sander, a Republican.

Filner, 70, has served on the school board and City Council and in Congress for 10 terms.

DeMaio, 38, was a council member in a suburban district and has sponsored voter-approved measures.
