Former CIA director David Petraeus testified before the House and Senate intelligence committees Saturday. He spent four hours telling the committees what he knew about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

During his testimony, he supported U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, who had been accused of misleading the nation in her insistence that “the attack was a spontaneous eruption rather than a failure to defend against a terrorist attack.”

He told the committee that after the CIA told the White House that the attack was a terrorist attack by a group linked to al-Qaeda, the Obama administration altered that explanation. Petraeus said he knew from the beginning that the attacks had not been part of a spontaneous protest over the anti-Muslim film.
