Nastiest Election In California: Not What You'd Think

Thanks to Propositions 20 and 14, California elections this year are a mess. Historically, California Democrats have been able to redistrict in order to keep most districts in the hands of Democrats.

However, Proposition 20 took that power out of Democrat's hands and into the hands of a bipartisan commission. Additionally, Proposition 14 created an interesting show this election season by pitting the top two primary winners against each other in the general election.

The combination of these two measures has caused many incumbents to be campaigning against other incumbents of their same party.

Nowhere has this created more controversy than in the San Fernando Valley. Howard L. Berman and Brad Sherman, both with 23 congressional races combined, are running against one another. Both are Democrats and representatives of the Jewish community.

On the surface, this races seems like a win-win for Democrats, regardless of the outcome they will have a Democrat in office. However, it isn't that simple. According to the Los Angeles Times, "[The race] ensures that money and energy is being spent by Democrats to beat Democrats in a year when most would like to see those efforts exerted elsewhere."

The 30th Congressional District race has turned into one of the nastiest races this election. Both candidates have virally the same stance on issues, thus the election has become about each candidates' personality. According to the Press Display, Berman has built a reputation of leadership throughout his 30 years on Capitol Hill, while Sherman is better known as a constituent.

So far the race seems to be swinging toward Sherman, who beat Berman in the primary by 10 points and still continues to best Berman in the polls

This campaign has been characterized by heated October debates and harsh campaign ads on both sides.
