MTA Bus Rape Suspect Identified

The man suspected of raping an 18-year-old mentally disabled woman on the 217 MTA bus in Culver City Wednesday evening has been identified, according to The L.A. Times.
Kerry Trotter, 20, was arrested on Friday after bus surveillance videos identified him as having allegedly attacked the woman in the back of the bus. The woman had been returning home from her special education school and had only recently been allowed to start taking the bus by herself.

According to The Times, Trotter "is a parolee and a transient who had previously been investigated on suspicion of sexual assault." Criminal records show he has also been convicted of drug possession and grand theft auto since last year.
"It was a crime of opportunity," said sheriff's Sgt. Dan Scott to The Times. "Unfortunately, [the victim] was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He followed her onto the bus and assaulted her."
Metro officials said that attacks like Wednesday's are rare on their buses and rail lines; three rapes have been reported this year out of millions of commuter trips, reported The Times.
