“Liz & Dick”, at the end of the day, is a TV movie. So despite heavy promotion and widespread viral responses, the producers at Lifetime know better than to take it so seriously. As for Lindsay Lohan, her performance displays the same amount of seriousness as her small role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2010 film “Machete”.

Therefore, it is evident after watching the film that the response it has been getting from critics and Internet users is wildly out of proportion. The natural behaviour after watching a bad film would be to criticise it for a while and stop talking about it. But with “Liz & Dick”, the discussions are only starting to escalate.

Twitter users have been tweeting about it since its original broadcast, with many watching it again and waiting for the channel’s third broadcast of the ‘campy’ film. Memes of Lohan as Liz have begun circulating the Tumblrs. News magazines, much like this one, have rushed to push out features on her, scrutinising the film and the implications for her career.

Somewhere in this entire Internet media frenzy, "Liz & Dick" itself has been lost.

For a TV movie, it’s great. Debuting at a modest 3.5 million viewers, it currently stands as the 4th most-watched TV movie this year. It currently holds a critic score of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is more than what can be said about most major theatrical productions (Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 currently has a score of 46%).

So “Liz & Dick” is far from sabotaging Lohan’s plan to get her career ‘back on track’ after a few negative responses. Look at how Rebecca Black launched her music career as a result of the flack/love her viral Youtube music video, “Friday” received. But unlike Black, Lohan has always been known to have great acting talent. And as the sole lead actress in the film, she has done a great job in marketing the film. She can get her career back on track any time she wants, assuming she was ever off track anyway.

But the 26-year-old actress has indeed succeeded in using this release to move herself away from a public topic of personal critique to that of professional critique. “Liz & Dick” may not be the best start, but it does its job well and hints at great stuff from her in the upcoming theatrical releases, “The Canyons”, “Inappropriate Comedy” and “Scary Movie 5”.
