Former NBCUniversal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker is the lead candidate to become the next president of CNN Worldwide and is in advanced negotiations with the cable news channel, The Wall Street Journal reported.

CNN’s current president and chief executive is Jim Walton, who announced in July he would step down by the end of the year.

Zucker was executive producer of NBC’s “Today” show and played a major role in the network’s news programming efforts, including coverage of the Olympics and elections, the Los Angeles Times reported. He left NBC almost two years ago after Comcast Corp. acquired a majority stake in the company.

According to the Times, Zucker is currently producing Katie Couric’s daytime talk show.
