Jared Lee Loughner, the man who pleaded guilty to shooting U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the head, wounded 13 others, and killed six people in the January 2011 attack in Tuscon, Ariz. was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.

Three months ago Loughner, 24, pleaded guilty to 19 federal charges under the condition that 30 other charges be dropped as well as a sentence of seven consecutive life terms in prison, but agreed to  spend the remaining years of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to The Associated Press a deal was reached after the judge found Loughner mentally unfit to stand trail or understand the charges against him. He was subjected to “forcible psychotropic drug treatments” and was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The surviving victims of the brutal attack  will come face-to-face with Loughner in court today for the first time since the shooting.

According to prosecutors an unknown number of victims will testify in court in front of U.S. District Judge Larry Burns. It’s still unclear if Giffords or her husband will attend the sentencing today or read a testimony.
