A new exhibit, appealing to both rock 'n' roll lovers and vintage fashionistas alike, is open for viewing at FIDM Museum & Galleries in downtown L.A.

“RIPPED: Expressions from the Underground” is an exhibition of rock 'n' roll T-shirts and memorabilia collected from the 70's and 80's - that explores punk rock's influence on style.

Shown alongside vintage posters, artist reflections and other memorabilia, the exhibition also includes personal donations, including a beloved rock T-shirt from design legend (and notorious rebel) Betsey Johnson.

Curated by Cesar Padilla, artist, musician, collector, and punk rock enthusiast, "RIPPED" is based on a personal love of rock 'n' roll. The items Padilla has collected over the years all come with personal stories ranging from tales of a small town band to Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono.

Standing amongst the collection of vintage tees with daring slogans and rebellious histories, a viewer is reminded how symbolic and life-changing something as simple as a rock T-shirt can be. Seminars, readings, and special events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

As expected, punk music plays on speakers and rock performances are projected onto a black wall in the gallery.

"RIPPED" is FREE to the public and open through Saturday, December 22, 2012.

As with any quality fashion exhibit, FIDM's organization of the artifacts places the viewer's emphasis most squarely on the clothing. Walking around an island of mannequins in vintage T-shirts, gallery-goers are encouraged to think about the symbolism of rebellious rock slogans fans choose to wear on their bodies. Many of the T-shirts are so loved and worn they are thinning and stained - a sign perhaps of the experiences they have endured.
