Oil giant BP was slapped with a ban on government contracts Wednesday, the latest in a string of punishment measures in light of the company's handling of a 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to CNN, the Environmental Protection Agency announced their decision to stop BP from taking on new government contracts or grants until the company proves it has learned its lesson since demonstrating a "lack of business integrity" surrounding the 2010 incident.

London-based BP pleaded guilty Nov. 15 to charges including manslaughter, obstruction of Congress and a slew of environmental offenses. The company will pay $4 billion in fines for those charges, on top of a $525 million payment to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Read a bit more in-depth about the penalties at Bloomberg News.

This latest development does not affect any standing contracts BP might have with the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, the Houston Chronicle reported site leaders Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza will going former exec David Rainey in court Wednesday to set trial dates in a hearing regarding criminal charges against them. Read more on that here
