Even though it is six days after the election, ballots are still being recounted in California, and one of the races in a recount situation is California’s 50th Assembly District (AD 50).

AD 50 is a new district formed by the independent commission during redistricting. The election was between two Democrats, incumbent Assemblywoman Betsy Butler and Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom, because of the top two primary system, which was approved by voters in 2010.

This race was a fight from the beginning and this recount only adds fuel to the fire.

In the late evening on Nov. 6, Bloom had a slight lead, which he held on the morning of Nov. 7 as well.

However, there were still a relatively small amount of votes separating the two. A recount ensued and it does not appear to be over, although, Bloom appears to have the lead. According to the county’s results website, which updated its results on Nov. 9, Bloom is leading Butler by just over 100 votes: 71,192 votes to 71,089 votes. In terms of percentage, Bloom is leading 50.04 percent to Assemblywoman Butler’s 49.96 percent.

This election looks like it is going to come down to a small amount of votes. It is unknown at this point when the county will certify a winner.

Butler moved out of her previous district, the 53rd Assembly District, in the South Bay to run in the newly created 50th District. Some thought she had the power of the incumbency on her side. If elected, Bloom would be a freshman lawmaker in Sacramento, but he is no stranger to politics or the 50th District. Bloom is the Mayor of Santa Monica and has been a resident of what is now the 50th District for many years.
