Arizona, typically known as a Republican state, has turned into a nail-biting competition for the U.S. Senate seat in the remaining hours of the election.

Former U.S. Surgeon Gen. Richard Carmona, an Independent turned Democrat is going up against GOP Rep. Jeff Flake.

As of Nov. 3, Flake led with 48.3 percent of votes and Carmona followed with 44.5 percent, leaving around 7 percent undecided.

Flake, as of Tuesday, was in the stronger position with Carmona not far behind.

This has prompted Flake to get aggressive through a series of radio ads that questioned Carmona’s temperament and called on retiring Sen. Jon Kyl and Sen. John McCain to storm the state on Flake’s behalf.

Flake has also faced criticism for his past tenure as a lobbyist for Namibian mining interests with ties to the Iranian government.

Carmona has been distancing himself from President Barack Obama and is primarily relying on heavy Latino turnout and his centrist political profile to pass the Republicans.

A Republican loss in Arizona would be a serious upset, as the state has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1988.
