Independent candidate Angus King has won the Maine senate race, defeating Democrat Cynthia Dill and Republican Charles Summers, according to NBC News.

King, who will take over for retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snow, will likely caucus with the Democrats, as he is a socially liberal legislator who supports the Affordable Care Act. King is the second Independent to win a seat in the U.S. Senate tonight with Vermont's re-election of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Neon Tommy projected King to win this race.
