Department of Defense statistics report women make up 14 percent of active military.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Department of Defense, challenging the policy banning women from serving in combat.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of four female service members, claims the 1994 policy is outdated and unconstitutionally bans an entire class from applying for more than 238,000 jobs.

The Pentagon has recently made strides to open more jobs for U.S. servicewomen, who make up nearly 14 percent of active military personnel. Yet, the lawsuit claimed the ban is negated by the reality of modern combat, where women already engage in combat.

This is the second lawsuit of its kind filed this year.
