40,000 New York Residents May Need Housing

Thirty-forty thousand New York City Residents may need housing due to destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the number in need of housing "may have been similar to Katrina," according to the Daily Beast.

Around 86,000 New York households have already registered for federal disaster assistance costing roughly $97 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Many housing developments will be out of commission for a long time as well.

As of Sunday, 730,000 people remained without power.
