USC vs. Colorado should have been billed as “Break Some Records Night,” because that’s what a pair of key Trojan offensive stars did in No. 10 USC's 50-6 win. Quarterback Matt Barkley became the Pac-12 and USC all-time leader in passing touchdowns surpassing former Trojan Matt Leinart when he reached No. 100 on a second-quarter touchdown pass to wideout Robert Woods. It was his fourth of a record-tying six touchdown passes.

“It’s a special day, it really is,” the senior said immediately following the game. “To be mentioned with Carson [Palmer] and Matt [Leinart], it means a lot, and to celebrate this with my team – Robert [Woods], especially. It means a lot to this university to represent them in that way.”

He downplayed it, though, stating, “I’ve been here for four years, so some of those career records were bound to be broken.”

Give yourself some credit, Matt. Barkley was sublime, completing 19 of 20 passes for 298 yards and six touchdowns. The 95-percent completion percentage is the highest in Pac-12 history, breaking Rick Neuheisel’s old record (minimum 20 attempts). It falls 0.8 percent shy of the all-time NCAA record held by current USC wide receivers coach Tee Martin.

Hold on, there’s more. Barkley broke the Pac-12 record for passing efficiency with tonight’s mark of 319.16, passing the 2005 number set by UCLA’s Drew Olson (301.3).

The junior Woods made his own bit of history today, as he passed Dwayne Jarrett for most career receptions for a USC receiver, passing the Jarrett’s mark of 216. He also broke the single game record for touchdowns in a game with four, improving a great stat line of eight catches and 132 yards to insane.

“I grew up watching [Steve Smith and Jarrett],” Woods said after his game. “Ever since I understood USC football and growing up seeing them play. I don’t see myself about them but a part of an elite group.”

“We’ve been playing for a 124 years here,” Kiffin said, “and we watched the most touchdown passes in the history of the game, seven, and we watched the most touchdown passes in the history of a career.”

“With Robert over here, not only does he break the all-time receiving record with a year and a half still left – he’s gonna announce he’s coming back here pretty soon,” Kiffin joked, “he catches four touchdowns today, which has never been done either, in basically a half of football.”

The offense was on-point all day and night, scoring 19 points in the first six minutes against a mismatched Colorado squad. Another two touchdowns were scored in the first half, pushing the Trojans' points 33 and their offensive yard total to 281.

And the defense’s performance couldn't be ignored. The dominating Trojan unit harassed Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb, recording five sacks, forcing six turnovers (but allowing 351 yards) while backups were frequently rotated in. The second-team offense and defense stepped in after Barkley’s final pass early in the second half, adequately picking up the slack.

“It was great to get those guys in," Kiffin said. "A bunch of guys making plays on defense, and the sacks – Kevin Greene with two big sacks on the day. And on offense, for the backup quarterbacks come in, they go for 4-for-5.”

Quarterbacks Max Wittek and Cody Kessler led the Trojans to a fourth quarter touchdown and field goal, respectively, to reach the final result.

But there was also some bad to a historic, one-sided performance. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams was ejected in the second quarter for a flagrant foul, where he punched a Colorado player in the facemask. The conference will review the incident and determine whether the freshman will be suspended.

“I was gonna pull him out of the game and kick him out anyway from what I saw,” Kiffin asserted, even though he did not clearly see Williams’ transgression.

The team still accrued too many penalties, including four personal fouls. At halftime, Kiffin addressed the team about its destructive miscues, preaching the “Trojan Way.”

“That’s not who we want to be and not the product we want to put out there,” he explained.

And it seemed all the players responded, too.

“We all came together and said, 'That’s not us. That’s not our character. That’s not the Trojan Way,'" sophomore linebacker Hayes Pullard said, who had the second sack of the year not attributed to a Trojan defensive lineman.

“Even though we’re having a good game,” receiver Marqise Lee said, “You still gotta keep your composure and keep your mind set positive rather than letting things affect you and doing crazy things.”

With the heart of the 2012 schedule upcoming – Arizona, Oregon, Arizona State, UCLA and Notre Dame – such a performance was essential to spring the Trojans forward.

At the end of the game, Barkley and Woods led the Spirit of Troy in a rendition of “Conquest,” on the heels of a special night.

“Growing up, [leading ‘Conquest’] is something I wanted to do,” Woods cheerfully responded. “Finally did it. That was the best part of the day for me, doing that in front of the band.”

And if the Trojans are lucky, Woods and others will be leading more “Conquest” performances in the future. That’s their hope, at least.

** If there are negatives on the night, this is probably the worst news: in the third quarter, left tackle Aundrey Walker left with an unknown injury. After the play, Walker fell down and remained on the field for a few minutes before being carted off.

** Greene’s team-leading two sacks were the first two sacks of his Trojan career. He also forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by USC.

** The Trojans face Arizona next week at 12:30 p.m. PDT and will be back at the Coliseum for their game against Oregon the following Saturday.
