Tom Cruises Sues Tabloids For "Abandonment" Claims
CNN reports the “Mission Impossible” actor is suing Bauer Publishing Group for a sum of $50 million. Bauer publishes both Life & Style and InTouch where the allegations appeared.
The actor’s lawyer Bert Fields claims he sent two letters to Bauer demanding retractions; his requests were refused.
"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri,” Fields explained. "She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie.”
According to the defamation lawsuit filed, the accusations appeared on the covers of the magazines following Katie Holmes and Cruise’s separation and subsequent divorce. The pair officially ended their five-year marriage in late August of this year and share custody of six-year-old Suri.
The InTouch cover in dispute, published September, reads "44 DAYS WITHOUT TOM ... ABANDONED BY DADDY ... Suri is left heartbroken as Tom suddenly shuts her out and even misses her first day of school... HAS HE CHOSEN SCIENTOLOGY OVER SURI FOR GOOD?" The July Life & Style headline displays, “SURI IN TEARS, ABANDONED BY HER DAD," below a photo of a forlorn looking Suri."
Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue." Fields said.
According to Fields, Cruise will donate all awarded funds to charity.
