An early morning explosion in a Damascus suburb in Syria killed at least eight people Saturday, in the country's first airstrike since a ceasefire took place on Friday.

The attack was the latest setback in efforts to at least a temporary peace through diplomacy, USA Today reported.

According to CNN, the Syrian government accused "terrorists" of detonating a car bomb outside a church, a claim that appeared to counter reports by opposition groups that a military police building was the target.

United Nations special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi proposed the peace plan to end the 19-month civil war in Syria on his most recent trip to Tehran, the Tehran Times reported.

The proposal, called for a ceasefire between the two parties, the dispatch of humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the violence, national dialogue between the government and the opposition, and a referendum to determine the political future of the country.
