Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc., and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. announced they will start listing calorie counts on vending machines starting next year.

The American Beverage Association, who represents the three companies, said that this Calories Count Vending Program aims to help consumers choose wisely when it comes to their favorite beverage, bearing in mind the various size options available.

According to their website, the initiative will “introduce new stickers on the front of beverage vending machines to remind consumers ‘calories count’ when making beverage choices and encourage them to ‘Check then Choose’ or ‘Try a Low-Calorie Beverage.’”

The program is set to launch in early 2013, starting in city buildings throughout Chicago and San Antonio. The program will then spread to vending machines nationwide.

Chicago and San Antonio city workers will be competing for a $5-million grant in conjunction with the program.

The announcement was made on Monday in Chicago where Susan K. Neely, president and CEO of the American Beverage Association said, “With our Calories Count Vending Program, everyone who works in or visits a municipal building in Chicago and San Antonio will know exactly how many calories are in their favorite beverages before making a vending machine purchase – and they will be reminded that ‘calories count’ as part of achieving a balanced lifestyle.”

Depending on the size, a single can of soda can have up to 250 calories. The American Beverage Association hopes the new vending machines will remind consumers the amount of calories they will be drinking and encourage a lower-calorie choice.
