This week's SNL was hosted by actress Christina Applegate, star of the new NBC series "Up All Night" alongisde other big time comedians such as Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph. In all honesty, even though Applegate's acting was way over the top for almost every sketch, the writing wasn't all bad this week! Let's take a look at the goods and the bads of this episode:

HITS

The Californians: Wedding

Anyone who follows SNL religiously would definitely recognize "The Californians" sketch that first aired before the end of last season. But with Kristen Wiig leaving the SNL cast, Applegate stepped in as Stuart's (Fred Armisen) second wife, Brie. We see a return of the entire Californian crew from last sketch: Devon (Bill Hader), the house maid (Vanessa Bayer) and Trey (Kenan Thompson); on top a few new ones like Todd Garnes (Taran Killam), their gay wedding planner, that really made an impression this time round. Everything that worked about this sketch the first time worked just as well this time. The over exaggerated California accents, dropping of road names and highways, extensive mentions of "real californian" products etc. But still, Christina Applegate was no Kristen Wiig. Other than that, bravo SNL! Watch it here.

Tech Talk: iPhone 5

For the first 2 minutes of the skit I thought it was going nowhere. And when Christina Applegate mentioned "Joining us now are 3 peasent laborers from China!" I really thought SNL was going to mess this one up bad. But it completely shocked me and the jokes were funnier than I could've ever imagined. When Armisen's character broke out the line, "You want Starbucks it take you to Dunkin' Donuts? That must be so hard." I knew I was in for a good one. And when they all started with the "sad Chinese violin song" and "traditional sarcastic dance" I literally died. I went into such a huge fit of laughter I almost teared up. Definitely one of my favorites for the night. Watch it here.

Taken Trailer

This spoof was pretty spot on I would say. I loved it (except for the pizza part -- that wasn't too great). Watch it here.
MISSES

Gillette Masters of Style

You have to admit, Jay Pharoah made a really good André 3000. And Fred Armisen's resemblance to Gael Carica Bernal is pretty uncanny. But other than that the Jerry Sandusky part was pretty... meh. Watch it here.

Choreographer

This sketch felt unnecessarily dragged out for way too long. There wasn't anything particularly funny about it. All I remembered from it was a bunch of flailing arms and high leg kicks. I was impressed by the Applegate's song and dance numbers, but nothing more than that. Watch it here.

Principal Frye: Hell-oween Bash

The only joke worth laughing at in this skit was the one about the 2 kids fornicating in the Mufasa suit, which Pharoah cracked up on upon delivery. Then it came to the point where I didn't even know if I was laughing at the joke itself or the fact that he could barely hold his laughter in anymore. Watch it here. Watch it here.

Overall this was a good week for SNL! Much better than what Daniel Craig had on last week's show. Looks like might actually be turning around this season.
