It looks like a love triangle will be brewing for Peter Parker next year in the upcoming sequel to Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Shailene Woodley is in talks to join the cast of the film as our favorite redhead Mary Jane Watson, according to Variety.

Woodley first gained popularity through her ABC Family hit series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which will be going into its fifth and final season. The 20-year old actress then played George Clooney’s daughter in Alexander Payne’s Oscar-nominated film “The Descendants,” earning her a Golden Globe nomination and many film offers.

If the deal for the Spidey sequel goes through and the film stays true to the comics, Woodley would potentially be rivaling Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy for the affections of Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield. The role had previously belonged to Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy.

Also looking to be cast is the role Harry Osborn, Parker’s best friend and ironically also the son of The Green Goblin. The role was previously played by James Franco. As for the villain of the next film, there has been no confirmation but one possibility would be Electro, a supervillain with the power to control electricity. This was hinted at in the post-credits scene of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” which featured lightning in the background.

The sequel film will begin production in early 2013 and is expected to hit theaters on May 2, 2014.
