Salt Lake Tribune Endorses Obama, Criticizes Romney
In a surprise move, Utah's The Salt Lake Tribune endorsed not Mitt Romney, but Barack Obama for president.
The newspaper praised Romney for his work in the 2002 Winter Olympics and his bipartisanship while serving as governor of Massachusetts. However, it said that although it likes Mitt Romney for that, the current presidential candidate seems alien to what they support. It accuses Romney of flip-flopping on his positions and pandering for conservative votes:
"Sadly, it is not the only Romney, as his campaign for the White House has made abundantly clear, first in his servile courtship of the tea party in order to win the nomination, and now as the party’s shape-shifting nominee. From his embrace of the party’s radical right wing, to subsequent portrayals of himself as a moderate champion of the middle class, Romney has raised the most frequently asked question of the campaign: 'Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?'
The evidence suggests no clear answer, or at least one that would survive Romney’s next speech or sound bite. Politicians routinely tailor their words to suit an audience. Romney, though, is shameless, lavishing vastly diverse audiences with words, any words, they would trade their votes to hear."
The Salt Lake Tribune instead endorsed Obama, praising him for stopping the freefall of the economy and his foreign policy.
Recent polling suggest that although Romney is likely to win in Utah, he is set to lose his home state of Massachusetts by a large margin.
