Gallup polling shows the Republican Presidential nominee ahead of the incumbent president by four points.

Nate Silver of the fiveeightthree blog said challenger Presidential Candidates typically lead in the polls after the first presidential debate.
Silver said:
Conventional wisdom holds that the first presidential debate offers an especially good opportunity for the challenging candidate, who for the first time gets to stand on a literal public stage, and a proverbial level playing field, with the incumbent president.
A poll by the Scholastic Student Vote ruled in favor of Obama. Although the demographic of this group will have no power in the upcoming election, analysts say this may be reflection of their parents' politics.

The Scholastic Student Vote may not be official, but its results have often indicated who eventually wins the presidential race. Scholastic has conducted the student mock vote during every presidential election since 1940.
Even if the next presidential debate ends in favor of President Obama, the power of picking the next president lies in the swing states.
"The states where you know what the voters will do are not important," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, told the Kansas Star. "The key states are where the polls are close and either candidate stands a chance of winning."
