Mitt Romney lashed out at Vice President Joe Biden over comments he made on Libya during last night's vice presidential debate. The Republican presidential candidate attacked Biden for denying that extra security had been requested for the Benghazi consulate before it was attacked.

Romney accused Biden of “doubling down on denial.”

During the debate, the topic of the Libyan consulate attack came up. Romney's campaign has been particularly critical of the administration's handling of the matter. Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan pressed Biden on the issue, saying that the Benghazi consulate had asked for more security. Biden countered, saying that that request did not come to the administration.

“Well, we weren't told they wanted more security again,” Biden said. “We did not know they wanted more security again. And by the way, at the time we were told exactly — we said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew. That was the assessment. And as the intelligence community changed their view, we made it clear they changed their view. That's why I said, we will get to the bottom of this.”

The consulate was attacked on Sept. 11 in what what ruled a terrorist attack. Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed during the attack.

Biden's comments contradict a testimony from State Department officials, who said additional security had been requested.

Trying to avoid any further controversy, the Obama administration said that the vice president was speaking on his own, and not for the government, with that comment.
