Conservative media outlets pounced Tuesday night on video of a 2007 speech by then-Sen. Barack Obama in which he argued the federal government doled out insufficient aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Atlanta Journal-Consitution reported conservative personalities Sean Hannity, Matt Drudge and Tucker Carlson swarmed in on what they called "devastating" video that proved Obama to be an "anti-white racist."

During their shows, they went so far as to hype up a simultaneous 9 p.m. release. But when the bell tolled, their bombshell fizzled.

From the AJC:

"…this was not a bombshell, and it is devastating only in the sense that it exposes just how cynically and effectively the right-wing media manipulates its core audience, particularly on matters involving race. As U.S. Rep. Allen West of all people put it afterward, 'What’s the ‘So what’ of this video? I don’t think it’s going to really go anywhere.'"

Desperate times call for desperate measures? Polls show Obama leads Romney in key swing states, but that dynamic might shift during tonight's first presidential debate in Denver.
