Three more patients died after contracting fungal meningitis, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told Reuters Tuesday. The death toll rose to 28 nationwide.

Two of the recent deaths were in Michigan and one was in Tennessee.

The number fungal meningitis cases reported was 356 as of Tuesday, up nine from Monday, the CDC told Reuters.

The outbreak was tracked to potentially tainted steroid injections supplied by New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass. The company now faces multiple investigations and has been accused of failing to produce medication in sterile conditions.
