Hugo Chavez's political career is on the line Sunday as the Venezuelan leader faces a stiff challenge from a young centrist state governor hoping to end the still-popular president's 14-year tenure in office, Reuters reported.

Henrique Capriles edged closer to Chavez in final polls thanks to an energetic campaign capitalizing on nationwide discontent over crime and cronyism. The anti-American Chavez, who has used record oil revenue to prop up allies around the world, wrote on Twitter, "The battle has started! Today we will write another chapter in history."

The 40-year-old basketball-loving Capriles tweeted, "Today we are millions of Davids! God will be our guide."

Chavez, 58, has been battling cancer over the past year, having undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Polls close at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
