A tsunami warning in Hawaii has been downgraded to an advisory after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of British Columbia caused smaller waves than expected, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The warning downgrade comes after a frantic night of preparation and evacuations on the islands. More than 800 people checked into emergency shelters on Honolulu.

No major damage was reported in British Columbia, where the quake hit at 8:00 p.m. local time.

A small earthquake also shook Los Angeles Sunday morning. The 3.9 quake was centered 5 miles southeast of Santa Clarita and hit at 8:24 a.m. No damage has been reported.
