Derek Jeter Out For Postseason
Jeter fractured his ankle while diving to make a catch against the Detroit Tigers, reports The Daily Beast. He was able to get the ball to second baseman Robinson Cano to prevent a run.
Pitcher Andy Pettitte said the injury was shocking to the team.
"For him to lay down on that field, I knew something was broke or torn completely,” Pettitte told ESPN.
Jeter had to be assisted off the field by Yankees manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donahue.
As he left the field, the crowd chanted his name.
He is expected to recover in three months and play next season.
The Yankees later lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series 6-4.
