City Target at Figueroa and 7th Street in downtown L.A. quietly opened its door to customers Wednesday morning, attracting crowds to the shopping center.

“It’s been very busy. We’ve had more guests here at City Target than we anticipated,” said store manager Simone Tatro. “All of the aisles are filled with guests.”

The store is 73,000 square feet on the sales floor. It’s a small urban store compared to a 126,000-square-foot traditional Target.

“We have sleek new designs. It’s a lot of aesthetics," Tatro said. "It’s a smaller building made for our urban guests. Instead of a big patio set, we have bistro sets, smaller size items, so they can easily carry it.”

The store has a Starbucks, grocery section and pharmacy.

Many office workers came to purchase their breakfast at the store's opening.

The pharmacy has been very popular with new prescriptions, Tatro said.

City Target hired 250 people from the community out of more than 9,000 applications, according to Tatro. “A fast, fun and friendly attitude” is what they look for when hiring.

“If people weren’t experienced, it was okay," Tatro said. "But if they have a great attitude, that’s why we hire them and we train them for skills."

The store’s grand opening is scheduled for Sunday. There will also be a guest celebration Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. when the store will give away gifts to customers.

Los Angeles has the most City Target stores in any city, said Tatro. The first City Target in Los Angeles opened in Westwood near UCLA last July. Another one is set to open in Beverly Connection next March.
