City Shortlist: October 6-12

October 5, 2012 | 5:31 p.m. PDT

City Shortlist is a weekly roundup of the city's best events handpicked by NT staffers.

Eagle Rock Music Festival | Oct. 6 | Center for the Arts Eagle Rock

For the best and most varied selection of live music this weekend, head over to Eagle Rock for one of the city’s largest free music festivals (all they ask is a $10 donation for future projects!). In its 14th year, the ERMF has grown to be a major player in the L.A. music scene with over 70 acts and ten stages in every imaginable genre. Strap on your dancing shoes for—what is sure to be— the high energy performance of local Latin band Las Cafeteras and wind down to the smooth sounds of beat smith Daedelus. (ERMF

Patti Smith | Oct. 12 | 8pm | The Wiltern

The godmother of punk, with music from her new album Banga in tow, will be hitting the stage in Los Angeles. Her first album since the release of her beautifully poetic memoir Just Kids in 2010, Banga is a multi-tasking musical tour-de-force: expect the usual word-smith brilliance alongside a song tinged with folk, another soul-jazz and yet another like a waltz. This Renaissance woman is sure to put on a good show still--one that will make you want to dance barefoot. (Live Nation)

Dog Adoption Day | Oct. 7 | 12pm-4pm | Amoeba Hollywood

If you've been looking for the perfect animal companion, save the date: Amoeba's hosting a Dog Adoption Day this Sunday in conjunction with the Beagle Freedom Project, which rescues beagles used in animal experimentation. Fido & friends will be at Amoeba all afternoon looking for a home, and afterward there'll be an auction benefitting the BFP. So spend your afternoon perusing records, and while you're at it, you might just pick up a big-eyed, wet-nosed, four-legged best friend. (Amoeba)

CicLAvia | Oct. 7 | 10am- 3pm | City-wide

Road rage? Skip the traffic. It’s CicLAvia’s third year in L.A., and you don’t want to miss it. Sunday, roads across the city will be cleared of cars for bikers, skaters and even walkers to take to the streets. This year, they’ve added new routes in Boyle Heights, Chinatown and Expo Park. It will be a welcome break in a city normally crammed with cars and congestion. (CicLAvia)
