City Shortlist: October 26-November 2
Walk like a zombie, celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in a cemetery, or see a screening of a beloved children's book. All of these and other festive offerings are happening in L.A this week.
Long Beach Zombie Walk Music & Arts Fest | Oct. 27 | 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. | Shoreline Village/Marina Green/Rainbow Harbor
Ever wonder if zombies really do walk among us? They sure do in Long Beach--at least this Saturday. The Long Beach Zombie Walk Music & Arts Fest is an all-day event dedicated completely to our ghoulish counterparts. There will also be three stages playing live music throughout the day, as well as makeup effects and zombie artists, games, appearances from horror authors, and a "Thriller" flashmob. An outdoor screening of "Shaun of the Dead" and the Long Beach Terror Trucks premier will also be featured at the zombie-fest, and much more post zombie walk entertainment. Gates open at 3 p.m. The event goes until 11 p.m. Regular festival passes are $15, and $50 for V(ery) I(mportant) Z(ombie) passes. Children 12 and younger are free. Dia de Los Muertos | Oct. 27 | 12 p.m. – 12 a.m. | Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Get your Dia De Los Muertos on with the biggest bash honoring the dead in all of California. On Saturday, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery will be home to a traditional Aztec procession, dance rituals and more than a hundred altars made to honor ancestors and loved ones. There will be a contest for the best altars and some major cash shelled out – first prize wins $3000. Costumes are encouraged, so come dressed in your skeletal best, enjoy music by jam band Ozomatil, La Santa Cecilia and more, and watch as the stars emerge over this iconic event. Tickets are $10 (bring exact change), but seniors and kids are free before 4 p.m.(Lady of the Dead).
"Where The Wild Things Are" Screening | Oct. 28 | 11 a.m. | UCLA Hammer Museum
The wild things are coming out to play for Halloween, but here's a PG event that everyone can enjoy. The Hammer Museum is screening Spike Jonze's delightful indie rendition of "Where The Wild Things Are" in conjunction with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and it's sure to be a good time for all. Adding to the cuteness: it's totally cool to come in costume. (UCLA Hammer Museum)

Looking for a chillingly exhilarating experience? All brave souls are invited to enter the Museum of Death. Run by a husband-and-wife duo, this haunted destination is filled with spooky offerings--everything from freakish taxidermy to Charles Manson memorabilia. Only those who can handle gore should attend (visitors have fainted at the door). The Museum of Death is open Sunday through Friday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $15. Free parking. (Museum of Death)
Mark Z. Danielewski: The Fifty Year Sword | Oct. 31 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m. | Redcat
LA writer Danielewski brings his ghost story for grown-ups, "The Fifty Year Sword," to life with Halloween night festivities that include an eerie theatrical presentation, music by Christopher O'Riley and special guests. The story centers on five children left to the care of a seamstress who become entranced by a storyteller's tale of vengeance. He sets out a black box in front of them, makes an ominous dare and...you'll just have to find out the rest on Halloween. (Redcat)
