Grab your bikes and walking shoes for Los Angeles’ fifth biannual CicLAvia this Sunday.

CicLAvia is a free event for the public in which the city closes downtown streets and surrounding areas for a portion of the day for cyclists and pedestrians.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., the streets will become car-free zones.

Cyclists, skaters, pedestrians and skateboarders will be able to freely walk or roll down the streets of Los Angeles, without dodging cars or breathing in the usual stench of pollution from passing vehicles.

CicLAvia was inspired by Bogotá, Colombia’s weekly street closures, known as ciclovías, that the city has hosted for the past 30 years.

L.A.'s first CicLAvia was in October 2010. This year, event organizers have increased the area CicLAvia encompasses.

The usual CicLAvia route includes Little Tokyo, Downtown and MacArthur Park. This year’s new route will also include Exposition Park, Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza and Soto Station in Boyle Heights.

Drivers can expect the following streets to be closed:

·      Figueroa Street: From Exposition Blvd to 7th Street

·      7th Street: From MacArthur Park to Spring Street

·      Spring Street and N. Broadway: From 7th Street to Chinatown

·      Parts of 1st Street, Central Ave. and E. 4th Street (See map here)

April’s CicLAvia attracted more than 100,000 Angelenos. Alaine Azcona, CicLaVia’s media relations officer, said they are expecting the turnout to be about the same this Sunday.

Azcona also suggested that participants prepare early for Sunday, by purchasing a Metro TAP card in advance. Several Metro Rail lines have stops along the CicLAvia route and will make it easier for participants to get in and out the city.
