The sudden spike in prices came after a power outage occurred in a California refinery Monday, halting production. Although the refinery came back online Friday, because few facilities outside California make the state's cleaner-burning gasoline, when any refinery goes down it dramatically decreases the gas supply for the state, Fox News reported.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com predicted that while prices will most likely stabilize by next week, in the meantime average gas prices could peak as high as $4.85, the Los Angeles Times reported.

That means that more people will be having similar experiences to gas consumers like Nancy Garcia, who told CNBC that she paid $4.65 a gallon for regular grade gas at a Chevron gas station in Highland Park. "I seriously thought it was a mistake on the sign when we pulled in," said Garcia who did not bring enough money with her to completely fill up her tank.

The previous record for average price of gasoline was made four years ago on June 19, 2008, at $4.6096 a gallon.
